PRAYING IN THE HOLY GHOST (TONGUES)

A lot of Christians are skeptical about speaking in tongues and it’s a little bit strange to me because it is God’s language. Apostle Paul says “He that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to men but to God”. Since you confessed Jesus as Lord of your life, the Holy Spirit now lives in you. He, being the Spirit of the Living God came with the heavenly language so that you might communicate with your Heavenly Father easily. Tongues is a language of your recreated spirit. When you pray in tongues, you are speaking mysteries in the realm of the spirit. When faced with any challenge of any sort, when you speak in tongues you tap into God’s strength to go through and you tap into God’s wisdom to handle that situation. If you want to praise God you can sing in tongues. There’s so much power in speaking in the Holy Ghost (I love to call it that).  There are lots of things that speaking in the Holy Ghost can do for you and in you.
It edifies you: Another word for edify is “embolden”. In 1 Corinthians 14:4 we see that “he that prays in an unknown tongue edifies himself…” when you pray more in the Holy Ghost, you are emboldened. You can have fear or timidity towards something, speak in tongues; declare God’s will over that situation by speaking in tongues. The will of God is that you be not afraid but have power, love and sound mind. The more you speak in tongues the bolder you become. You are no longer bordered about threats made by some people. And even if you find yourself in a life threatening situation; speak in the Holy Ghost. When armed robbers attacked us in our office asking for money, I spoke in other Tongues throughout that encounter. I must say it was  life threatening because several threats were made on people’s lives but through speaking in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit gave me assurance of our safety. The thieves finally left without seriously hurting any of us. Speaking in the Holy Ghost is more than just a gift, it is a privilege for the children of God.
It builds you up: Another thing speaking in tongues does for you is building you up. Jude 1:20 puts this way “But ye beloved, building up yourselves in your most holy faith praying in the Holy Ghost.” It’s more like charging your battery; the more you spend time speaking in tongues ignoring the distractions around you. Your spirit is very alert to the voice of God, the eyes of your understanding are very enlightened, you feel God’s feelings and speak His words in a given situation. You tend to hear God even louder than before you and act upon that Word as surely as ever. It stirs the anointing within you; it stirs up your spirit. Every sound you make in tongues has meaning; don’t ever think that you are speaking nonsense simply because you don’t understand it. It is rather more proof that it is your spirit praying and not you. You are speaking the will of God, you are speaking mysteries and that is a unique heavenly language that the enemy cannot understand.
It empowers you to preach. If you are shy to preach or to talk to your friends about God, speak in tongues. I remember some years ago, I had been reading the Bible without understanding; I wasn’t really speaking  in tongues because I believed that I didn’t understand. So I prayed in tongues a little and prayed in English and started reading the book of Esther. I enjoyed every moment I spent that day reading the Bible; I took down notes, preached about it during devotions at home and many people at home were blessed. When you pray in tongues, you realize that God’s Word is revealed to you more and more, you enjoy you bible study time.  I remember reading one of Smith Wigglesworth’s books where he mentioned that he reads the Bible in tongues. Goodness! That is so awe inspiring. I love to sing in tongues, it gives so much joy and the rhythm flows like I’ve mastered the song my whole life.
It is fellowshipping with the Father through the communion of the Holy Spirit: When you speak in tongues, you are fellowshipping with the Father through the communion of the Holy Ghost because you are speaking His language. Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:14 says “ if I pray in tongues my understanding is unfruitful and he also says that “if I pray in the spirit and with my understanding also”… speaking in the Holy Ghost should come first and your understanding later. When the Bible says “we know not what we should pray for but the Holy Spirit who prays in moanings and groaning which words cannot utter (paraphrased) Romans 8:26. The Holy Spirit knows what we should pray for and so praying in tongues speaks the mind of the Father.

Dear beloved of God, speaking in tongues is a spiritual encounter and an awesome experience. God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship him in spirit and in truth (John 24:4). Praying in the Holy Ghost is part of this spiritual truth. If you don’t speak in tongues pray and ask Jesus by faith because the Holy Ghost is in you and remember that anyone who asks receives. After praying open your mouth and speak in tongues (halleluiah) Romans 10:9-10. Now that you are born again and filled with the Holy Ghost, you have all that comes with the Salvation package; a new identity, a new nature, freedom, peace etc and you have all it takes to set your world ablaze in Christ.

 Be Blessed in Jesus Name!!!
